Community Orchard and gardens

The community orchard is situated at the Sports Ground on Ring Fort Road, just behind the Astroturf. It is being run by residents and we currently have two varieties of apples. In the coming months, we shall be planting more fruit trees and further maintenance.

As the orchard is being renovated, it is temporarily closed to let the young plants establish themselves. Various plants, bulbs, and seeds are poisonous and/or toxic to dogs. We would also like to remind all residents that we have a no-pets policy and pets are not allowed in the orchard. In the past, we have had damage to the plants and owners not picking up dog poo.

Community Garden

Our community garden is situated by the stone shards sculptures in the small park between Topper Street and Engledow Drive. The park was renovated as part of the S106 agreement with the developers in 2024. Raised beds were put in as part of the project and residents have made full use of the opportunity to plant a healthy crop of vegetables! With additional funding from South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Community Growing Grant, fruit trees and berry bushes were planted in December 2024.

If you would like to get involved or find out more, please get in touch.

Community growing weekends: Sun 12th Jan 2025 and Sun 19th Jan 2025

Photos from the event:

Many thanks to all the volunteers who braved the cold weather to plant a row of 20 raspberry canes, and the currant and gooseberry bed. Many thanks to those who joined us for the wassailing afterwards!

Apple picking day – Sat 21st Sept 2024

Many thanks to the residents who came to help pick apples and tidied up our orchard last Saturday. Although there weren’t many apples left, we have enough to do some apple juicing next week!

We shall be picking apples on Sat 21st Sept 2pm – 4pm at the Community Orchard on Ring Fort Road. Then we shall be celebrating Apple Day at the Common House at 9 Marmalade Lane on Sat 28th Sep 2-6pm.

Mulching and weeding event Monday 6 pm – 8 pm

Meet our residents as we do some weeding and mulching in our orchard. We shall be checking in on our saplings, clearing weeds, and spreading wood chips to maintain moisture levels.

Update on our apples – 1st Aug 2024

Our apples are coming along nicely this year and we hope to harvest them at a community apple day event later in Autumn. Please note that our varieties are late-season apples and will not be ready until October. Please resist the temptation to try them until fully ripe, as they will be mouth-puckeringly sour in July-Sept.

Mulching event 27th April 2024

Join us in mulching our newly planted 100 saplings this Saturday 27th April from 11:30 am. Meet at the community orchard at the sports ground on Ring Fort Road, just behind the astroturf.

Join us on 6th Jan 2024 11 am as we plant new fruit trees!
